Drawing & the Renaissance

What is this profound relationship between drawing and the European Renaissance??
Dig deep. What informat
ion can you find? What do you see? What makes the drawings of the Renaissance so compelling they are still valued today?
The European Renaissance is often referred to as a great period of rebirth. It is also known for its cultivation of the arts and sciences; namely drawing and painting, but also printmaking and architecture

.
During the Renaissance, drawing was the sturdy foundational practice of all artistic explorations. Artists such as Leonardo,
Michaelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Dürer, Sofonisba Anguissola, and more engaged in the observational practices of sketching and drawing from real life figures, objects, and places.
What major scientific discoveries were made and documented in the forms of drawings and/or sketches? What artist is best known for making these types of discoveries (known for being both a scientist and an artist)?
